Rationale:

Due to the fourth industrial revolution, CAD/CAM technology and machinery have been brought to the forefront of the fashion design and manufacturing industry. This has caused a change on the factory floor design landscape, and it has been dominated by semi-automation and we will soon see artificial intelligence linked to robotics. This course is rooted in CAD/CAM technology, which is the foundation for future applications on the factory floor. These applications are linked to pattern making and grading, automated sewing, cutting, spreading and other future applications that can be linked to AI on the factory floor. The cost of technology has significantly dropped over the years, making it accessible to poor and middle-income countries. And with this, the use of automation will create consistency on the quality of products, high productivity, and competitiveness.

The qualification ensures that the designer is adequately equipped with the knowledge and skills of CAD software and technology. This course will give them the industry-required specialised and practical skills while it addresses the need to resolve the unemployment issues plaguing the country.
This qualification is designed to produce learners who can work in the fashion industry in positions that relate to pattern making, grading, technical designing, fit technician (3D), CAD specialist, product developer, trainer/lecturer, and entrepreneur.

This qualification looks to address the lack of specialised skills within the fashion industry, it also looks to normalise the use of CAD/CAM technology and machinery within the industry for students to keep up with technological changes within the industry. The qualification seeks to address the following areas:

Emphasis on the use of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) technology and software for technical drawings, pattern making and grading. Use of a plotter, digitizer, and printer. The use of cutting devices, spreaders, and pattern sewing within a set of products in which they specialise. This qualification will focus on making a technical drawing, digital pattern making and grading through block creation and manipulation and familiarizing learners with CAD software and pattern making and grading principles, concepts, and tools. Pattern sewing, spreading and the use of cutting devices.

The qualification will include other important skills such as the following:
  • Digitizing existing paper patterns into a digital format.
  • Effectively communication pattern changes and updates.
  • Saving and exporting digital patterns for production.
  • Ratings, nesting, and marker making.
  • Quality control of digital pattern.
  • Patterns making and grading costing.

This qualification provides learners who have left high school or learners who have already studied a fashion-related qualification, the prospect of receiving sufficient specialised knowledge and skills in digital pattern making and grading, with the formal recognition for the skills and knowledge they have acquired. It creates the opportunity for learners to improve their employability or gives them the tools needed to begin their own business once the course is complete with the specialty in digital pattern making and grading. It also presents the opportunity for the learner who has worked within the fashion industry without a formal qualification as a pattern maker, as recognition for their skills, knowledge and competency acquired in the workplace. This opportunity further expands into learning digital pattern making and grading skills which can increase efficiency and speed at the workplace.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING:
It is assumed that learners are competent in the following:
  • 3 years experience or more with a Diploma or Higher Certificate in Fashion Design or a Fashion-related qualification
  • Work experience of a minimum of 6 years as an assistant pattern maker, assistant grader, bespoke designer, or fashion assistant.
  • Experience with manual pattern making.
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Basic mathematics / Grade 8 Mathematics
