Rationale:

Walking into the workplace can be quite an intimidating feat, especially when coming straight from school. Our 12-month-long Internship Programme aims to help graduate students integrate into the work environment by improving their theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Aside from adding experiential learning to their CV to encourage employability for potential employment, our Internship Programme teaches students workplace soft skills such as communication, diligence, communications, patience, teamwork, and creative and critical thinking skills as events happen within the business. This is through working together on real projects such as being a part of the designing process, sourcing, and fittings, which will require a hands-on approach while they work in a factory setting.

Students also get the opportunity to establish professional connections for when they have left the classroom. This is through being part of collection development and showcasing for events such as South African Fashion Week. Opportunities such as these allow students to explore different careers within the fashion industry while being part of a big project such as this.

Another advantage is that students can pinpoint the skills or knowledge that they need to improve on prior to entering the workplace. This can be with improving their understanding of how a product is developed from start to sample through briefs, tech packs, and specification sheets, improving their CAD/CAM technical skills for technical drawings, pattern making and grading. Access to a state-of-the-art functional factory will enable them to learn and operate a variety of manual and semi-automated machinery and understand their use and capabilities while they navigate the processes of the factory floor.

Our Internship Programme looks to bridge the gap between the school environment and the workplace by providing students with their first look into the workplace without the pressure of having to know everything. Our programme will advance their knowledge while they receive real-world and hands-on experience and while receiving experience in a work setting so that they know what they can expect when they step into their place of work.
